AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO OUR PATIENTS TAKING ZETIA OR VYTORIN:

A recent study was published comparing the effect of simvastatin (Zocor) vs. Vytorin (a combination of Zocor and Zetia) on the thickness of carotid artery walls. Despite a significant improvement in cholesterol levels in the combination group, there was a trend towards worsening of the arterial wall thickness. THIS WAS A SMALL STUDY THAT DID NOT LOOK AT HEART ATTACKS, DEATH OR ANY MEASURE OF ACTUAL CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE.

WE SEE NO REASON TO HAVE OUR PATIENTS MAKE ANY CHANGES IN THEIR PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS UNTIL STUDIES THAT ACTUAL LOOK AT HEART DISEASE ARE AVAILABLE.
